Last Feb. 25 on Edsa 40th anniversary celebration instead of being with the throng in celebration of the 4-day historic event that has ousted the late Martial Law regime strongman despot Ferdinand Marcos Sr., father of the sitting president now in Malacanang Palace, I was at the clinic of my orthopedic doctor - which I will not name here in my Tumbas Manipis column - for a checkup on my irritating right back and shoulder pain that has been punishing me without mercy for a month now since I had a mild stroke last Feb. 8 and had to be hospitalized first at Mt. Carmel Gen. Hospital then for lack of available room transferred to Unihealth Hospital and Medical Center.

He is now 82 yrs. old, so he told me at the recent command visit of PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar at the mess hall of the Quezon police provincial headquarters in Camp Nakar. We – Ace Fernandez, Sol Luzano and Anna Gob, Opinyon news team – are supposed to have come just in time for the arrival of the PNP chief and for the expected press conference which we are eager to attend but only to realize we arrived late when we discovered the presscon has already been done.

THE political virus is here with the Commission on Elections schedule of the filing of Certificate of Candidacy from Oct. 1 to 8 (I am crafting this column on Oct. 2, the 2nd day of the filing of the COC) but in the Philippines, has it ever disappeared?

BEING a journalist, being a chronicler of events along with personalities who help shape those events, could either make or break you at the seams. Being a witness to the changes or sameness, the monotony or speed of the shifting events, the meanness or boorishness of people in the corridors of power, and of course, those power-hungry and ego-tripping politicians who have an eye always and forever, for the next vote if not the media mileage of it all, cannot but reduce the poor journalist to a jaded and cynical guy and before he knows it, can make him a smart ass, almost rotten to the core.
