Wild Wishes for 2024?

As 2023 comes to a close and a new year begins, we cannot help but look ahead to a better 2024 for us Filipinos. Problems have plagued us not only as individuals but also as a people. As a Christian nation in particular, it is understandable that we pray and hope that the God of mercy, justice and peace will grant us our wish for a better and less problematic Philippines. Of course, why not wish for what may be possible in an impossible situation, or better yet, to dream that the impossible can really turn into a happy reality.

First off, we wish the President and Vice President will be humble enough to listen to the voices of well-meaning expert professionals who only desire to help the country towards true development. But more importantly, this “uniteam” leadership should listen to the voices of the poor, the oppressed, the exploited, and the marginalized who have been neglected for decades now. And offhand, in true leadership fashion, it should address their urgent needs, according to their own honest personal assessment of how matters should be resolved.

Moreover, we wish Bongbong and Sara will turn away from, nay, dispense with, the demonic policies and programs of the previous administration. Instead, by January 1, 2024, they seriously focus on leading their allies in Congress, in the executive branch, and most especially, in the judicial branch of government to do their jobs honestly in accordance with their respective mandates. And that is in accordance with the Rule of Law and the Philippine Constitution to serve the people and “to build a just and humane society.” In fact, our Constitution explicitly implores “the Almighty God…to promote the common good…to secure to ourselves…a regime of TRUTH, JUSTICE, FREEDOM, LOVE, EQUALITY and PEACE.”

Are these wild wishes for Bongbong and Sara to implement effectively, come 2024, stopping corruption, and following the path of Christ, the Lord of Justice and Peace, for our Christian nation? As in so many cases of Filipinos looking ahead expectantly, “ABANGAN!” Or, “God help us!”
