Today, December 30, 2023 is the 127th Anniversary of the Heroism of National Hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. And the news says: “PANG. MARCOS NANGUNA SA PAGGUNITA NG RIZAL DAY SA LUNETA.”

Even as a new year 2024 is about to start, the Filipino people fervently wish that Bongbong Marcos, deep in his heart as he leads the nation in honoring the heroism-martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, will honestly work out in action the people’s aspiration, “to build a JUST and HUMANE society.”

Right off, Bongbong should, in this season of Jesus Christ’s birth month, address the current protests led by PISTON, MANIBELA and other Jeepney Drivers groups against the government’s PUV Modernization Plan. Especially so, since such will practically kill them and their families, with their loss of livelihood, and for the millions of jeepney commuters, the deprivation of cheap transportation they badly need in going to their work places. Such a listening ear from the head-of-state will fittingly reflect Rizal’s mindset of giving due course to the masses who compose the marginalized sectors under this administration.

Of course, the other national problems that need urgent solutions, as Rizal would think where he a Political Consultant to the President, are giving justice to the more than 30 thousand families of EJKs and red-tagged killings; critical economic recovery, particularly bringing down the price of rice to P20/kg and the prices of other staple food items; providing appropriate assistance to the jobless, landless and homeless ‘kababayans’; serving publicly as a model of SERVANT-LEADERSHIP for his fellow self-serving dynastic government officials and shutting down any devious plans of amending the Constitution; and, not least, stop with the proper diplomatic response the continuing bullying of China regarding our territorial rights in the West Philippine Sea.

Indeed, with a President discerning the serious national problems plaguing the country with the nationalistic perspective and spirit of our national hero-martyr Dr. Jose P. Rizal, and applying pinpoint solutions to such problems, the Filipino people will rejoice and shout to high heavens, “Happy New Year -- 2024!” BUT is this only a dream, or a happy possibility? Abangan!
