Rep. France Castro of the ACT Teachers Partylist has filed a criminal complaint against former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte a few days ago for alleged grave threats, against her life. Apparently, Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte attempted to defend his daughter Sara’s proposed millions (or is it billions) of pesos 2024 budget for Confidential Funds under her offices as Vice-President and as Secretary of DepEd, which was questioned by the lady congressman, as did other legislators.
It is undoubtedly a courageous move by Rep. France, as she even clarified that she had received death threats even while she was mourning her father’s recent death. She has been aware, as with most of our countrymen, that this former president has had no qualms during his incumbency about his fake drug war where he ordered his then Chief of Police Bato to implement what was known as operation “Tokhang,” resulting in more than 30,000 Filipinos killed, which included innocent youths and even priests. Moreover, as former Mayor of Davao City, he had been found to have allowed the countless killings of his constituents.
Will Lady Justice be able to truly bring swift, or even delayed, justice to the lady representative with her criminal complaint against Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte? The truth is this latest cry for justice from a lady legislator is just one among the thousands of cries of victims of varied types of injustices in the country. Will DOJ Sec. Remulla be able to prove his worth as a public servant with this prominent charge against his former boss?
The people cannot forget the case of former Sen. Leila de Lima, incarcerated for more than six years now despite the recantation of several witnesses, proving her innocence of the charges against her. The NTF-ELCAC has been red-tagging activists, journalists and organizations, and has resulted in the killings or disappearances of civilians, among them youths, so-called activists, journalists and leaders of labor unions and farmers’ groups. Leaders of Indigenous People organizations have not been spared. More than 700 political prisoners are currently languishing in jails all over the country. How about the Percy Lapid case, or even the DOH-related Pharmally corruption case, which former Sen. Dick Gordon followed up recently in the news?
Of course, most prominent of the cases still hanging for many years now are that of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s alleged “crime against humanity” carefully being followed up by the International Criminal Court in the Hague, and the well-known real estate tax evasion case with conviction by the Court of Appeals of the public official from the Ilocos Region in the 1980s. Moreover, the latest issue and probably watched in the social media is the alleged rigging by Comelec/Smartmatic of the May 19, 2022 elections. The Filipino people as well as the international community are actually hoping the Philippine Supreme Court will take appropriate action to expedite the dispensation of justice to every Filipino victim of injustice.
