ILOILO CITY — The local government of Iloilo, in collaboration with the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC), has embarked on a transformative journey to empower 25 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the female dormitory of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

Through skills training in bread making, coupled with financial literacy programs, these individuals are being equipped with the tools necessary to secure livelihood opportunities both during and after their incarceration.

The partnership with the Philippine Foremost Milling Corporation, which generously provided resources for the training, exemplifies the spirit of cooperation between the public and private sectors in fostering positive change.

The recent culmination of the jail pantry training on April 3 marked a significant milestone in the journey of these PDLs towards self-sufficiency and reintegration into society.

Empowering Approach

Notably, the Department of Trade and Industry's involvement in providing financial literacy training underscores the holistic approach taken to empower these individuals.

Beyond honing technical skills, emphasis is placed on financial management and entrepreneurial acumen, essential for navigating the complexities of the modern economy.

The tangible support extended by various stakeholders, including the donation of tools, equipment, and kiosks by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., reflects a community-wide commitment to the rehabilitation and well-being of PDLs.

Moreover, the provision of essential resources such as stoves and liquefied petroleum gas by the city government and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo further reinforces the sustainability of this initiative.

PDLs Get Emotional

The emotional response from the PDLs upon receiving this support speaks volumes about the impact of such programs on their morale and sense of dignity. By fostering a sense of purpose and hope, the local government of Iloilo is not only addressing immediate economic needs but also laying the foundation for meaningful societal reintegration.

This initiative builds upon previous successes, highlighting the city government's ongoing commitment to the welfare of PDLs.

The continuity of training programs, coupled with plans for expansion to accommodate larger facilities, underscores a long-term vision for sustainable rehabilitation and empowerment.

The recent acquisition of a two-hectare property in Barangay Buntatala in Leganes, Iloilo, further underscores the city government's dedication to improving the conditions for PDLs. By providing enhanced facilities and resources, it is paving the way for more comprehensive support systems and opportunities for growth.

As the city government of Iloilo continues to champion initiatives that prioritize rehabilitation and empowerment, it sets a commendable example for other communities to follow.

By investing in the potential of every individual, regardless of their circumstances, Iloilo is forging a path towards a more inclusive and resilient society.
