TALISAY -- The Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) on Wednesday (10 Jan 2024) reported that six areas in the province have experienced an occurrence of smog from the Taal volcano.
The PDRRMO said the areas affected by the smog include Calaca City, Alitagtag, San Nicolas, Tuy, Barangay Banyaga in Agoncillo, and Barangay Boso-Boso in Laurel.
However, PDRRMO Chief Amor Calayan assured the public that the impact on these areas remains minimal, despite the release of 10,933 metric tons of sulfur dioxide by the volcano since last week.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin indicates a consistent level of sulfur dioxide emissions since January 9, with a decrease compared to levels observed on January 4.
Taal Volcano maintains Alert Level 1, suggesting low volcanic unrest, while acknowledging the possibility of minor ashfalls, volcanic earthquakes, and the release of harmful gases, along with the potential for phreatic eruptions due to the upwelling of volcanic fluids.
