Street food has become one of the most popular tourist attractions among our neighbors in Southeast Asia. So why can't we promote it here in the Philippines?

Senator Nancy Binay has called on mayors and governors to enhance the quality of Philippine street food, aiming to elevate the tourism experience for both locals and visitors.

Her statement followed President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr's recent vlog discussing gastronomic tourism titled "Chibog" (a Filipino term for "eat"), shared on his YouTube channel.

Binay emphasized that Filipino street delicacies offer an authentic glimpse into local cultures and flavors, embodying the essence of a place.

To bolster tourism, Binay suggested that local government units (LGUs) support food hawkers through training initiatives focused on sanitation, safety practices, and food preparation, handling, and serving techniques.

Expressing appreciation for the President's acknowledgment of the significance of Pinoy street foods in tourism, Binay highlights the viral success of "Diwata Pares Overload," a street food stall in Pasay City, drawing crowds with its beef stew, crispy pork, and fried chicken.

Binay underscored the untapped tourism potential of street food culture and advocates for LGUs to assist small vendors, essential contributors to the local economy.

She proposed the designation of vending and no-vending zones to ensure smooth pedestrian flow and traffic, particularly as street food adventures thrive.

Looking ahead, Binay envisioned a nationwide culinary event, such as the "Jollyjeep Jamboree," "Usok-Tusok," or "Pares Olympics," where LGUs showcase their best Filipino beef stews and local menus in a vibrant street food festival.
