Following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar and Thailand last week, concerned sectors are asking: are we really ready for the feared "Big One"?

Several local government units in Metro Manila such as Quezon City have invested heavily in disaster response equipment, such as those presented by personnel of the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office - Urban Search and Rescue unit to reporters Tuesday, April 2.

These include shoring equipment used as temporary support for unstable structures, chainsaws, and a life locator, which is essential for finding live victims trapped in a disaster site during rescue missions. However, the only real test for these equipment will be if the dreaded high-magnitude earthquake does strike Metro Manila, in which authorities already foresee thousands of casualties and widespread damage to property.
