A total of 48% of Filipinos consider themselves poor, according to the result of the recent survey of the Social Weather Station. This reflects a significant increase of almost half of the Philippine population, from 12.5 million in June 2023 to 13.2 million.

“Compared to June 2023, the percentage of poor families rose by 3 points from 45%, while borderline families fell by 6 points from 33%, and not poor families rose by 3 points from 22%,” SMS wrote.

The increase in ratings reflects largely in Mindanao, which rose from 54% to 71%, while there was a three percent increase in Metro Manila, from 35% to 38%. An increase was also observed in Visayas (57% to 58%). This record, on the other hand, reciprocates in Luzon, where 35% of the Tagalogs were poor, a little bit less than 39% in September.

Filipinos on the borderline of Not Poor and Poor show movement, with 23% to 29% in Metro Manila, 28% to 32% in Visayas, 38% to 25% in Luzon, and 33% to 25% in Mindanao.

Not Poor Filipinos, on the other hand, shows that from 23% it rose to 40% in Luzon, from 42% to 33% in Metro Manila, and a significant drop from 13% to 4% in Mindanao and 15% to 8% in Visayas.

“Of the estimated 13.2 million self-rated poor families in September 2023, 1.8 million were newly poor, 1.7 million were usually poor, and 9.7 million were always poor,” SWS further wrote.

The survey was conducted from September 28 to October 1, 2023, with 1,200 adults through a face-to-face interview, with a sampling error margin of +2.8% for national percentages and +5.7% each for balanced Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, as well as Metro Manila.
