Poverty remains a persistent challenge that grips the lives of countless Filipinos, inhibiting their opportunities for a better future. It is an issue that goes beyond mere economic deprivation, as it permeates various aspects of individuals' lives, stifling their potential and perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage. To address this pressing concern, comprehensive efforts must be made to alleviate poverty, focusing on improving access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Poverty's grip on Filipino lives

Almost half, or 47 percent, of Filipinos surveyed in December by the Social Weather Station rated themselves poor, of which 32 percent rated themselves as food poor, meaning they suffered hunger and could not afford three meals a day because of high food prices.

In the recent survey of the Social Weather Station (SWS) from September 28–October 1, 2023, 9.8 percent of Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger.

A total of 48% of Filipinos consider themselves poor, according to the result of the recent survey of the Social Weather Station. This reflects a significant increase of almost half of the Philippine population, from 12.5 million in June 2023 to 13.2 million.
