Along with promoting Mindanao tourism, the Department of Tourism’s newest video series also hopes to incite support for Halal-certified products available nationwide and to document Muslim culinary practices.

In line with the celebration of the Muslim festival Eid’l Adha, the Department of Tourism (DOT) launched the Halal Culinary Tourism video series aimed to attract tourists to Mindanao or at least experience its unique culinary heritage.

The video series is expected to be released to the public through DOT’s social media platforms.

“Food is an important part of a tourism experience. It gives us a glimpse of a place’s culture and heritage,” said Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat. “Through the development of Halal Culinary Tourism, we are encouraging the discovery and familiarity with the traditions of our Muslim brothers and sisters.”

Halal, literally translated, means permissible.

In the launch video, Dr. Norodin Kuit of the Muslim Mindanao Halal Certification Board, Inc. explains that Halal dishes contain two elements; the religious Islam custom of only consuming those permissible and the food science that makes it clean, pure, wholesome, and harmless.

Along with promoting Mindanao tourism, the video series also hopes to incite support for Halal-certified products available nationwide and to document Muslim culinary practices.

Gurlie Fronoza, a tourism officer in Cotabato City, said halal culinary products are healthy because they are basically organic.

While the videos are yet to be released, the launch video has already teased several establishments in Mindanao that have gained popularity for their Hahal dishes.

These include:

•Black Seed Burger in Davao City, which features “black seed” on a burger, a traditional herb among western Asian culture that is believed to have medicinal values;

•SpiChef in Davao City, which offers the Mango Pineapple hot sauce, an innovation of fresh and natural herbs and spices;

•Bay Tal Mal in Zamboanga City, which offers traditional Moro cuisines like Tiyulah Itum that is usually served during special occasions;

•and Hashy’s Cuisine in Cotabato City in BARMM, one of the pioneering Halal-certified sites in the region.

Also featured are: Babu Kwan and Torogan Kape in Cagayan de Oro City, Pater al-Kuwait House of Palapa in Iligan City, Dennis Coffee Garden in Zamboanga City, Mama Ping in Cotabato City, Tambilawan Kamayan Restaurant in General Santos City, and Radin’s Guinamos in Agusan del Sur.
