Manila -- Batangas State University has achieved a significant improvement in its global standing as one of the top universities committed to green campus practices and environmental sustainability.
According to the 2023 UI Greenmetric World University Rankings, the university has advanced from the 351st position last year to an impressive 300th this year or, 51 steps up.
The university's remarkable progress is evident in key sustainability indicators.
Notably, there has been a noteworthy 63.37% increase in energy and climate change initiatives, a commendable 30% advancement in water management practices, and a 12.80% improvement in transportation sustainability initiatives.
Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, the President of Batangas State University, attributed this remarkable ascent to the collaborative efforts of the entire university community.
He emphasized the implementation of eco-friendly practices, the promotion of sustainability initiatives, and the cultivation of a green mindset among students, faculty, and staff.
In recognition of its dedication to sustainability, the university was appointed as the National Coordinator for UI GreenMetric in the Philippines in August.
This appointment reflects BatStateU's commitment not only to promoting green practices within its campuses but also on a national scale.
The UI Greenmetric World University Rankings (UIGWUR) is a comprehensive assessment of green campus and environmental sustainability practices among world universities.
Initiated by the Universitas Indonesia in 2010, the ranking evaluates universities based on six criteria: transportation, water usage, waste management, setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, and education and research.
This year, a total of 1,183 universities worldwide were evaluated on three pillars of sustainability: Environmental, Social, and Economic.
The criteria used by UIGWUR provide a holistic view of each university's commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring a thorough assessment of their impact on the environment and society at large.
As Batangas State University continues to make strides in green campus initiatives, it stands as a beacon of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship in the global academic landscape.
