Not content with just being the country’s leading real property developer with commercial leases and residential spaces for business, Megaworld Corp. of billionaire Andrew Tan is investing P1.2 billion to build the Mactan World Museum as its crown jewel in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu.
The world museum in Mactan will be Tan’s fourth museum project, depicting the history of the places where his townships rise.
Spanning five galleries on the second floor, the museum will feature historical artifacts, replicas and interactive displays in its 30-hectare Mactan Newtown Boulevard residential condominium.
The museum will lend a visual retelling of the travel and arrival of Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew in Mactan, his defeat against the fearless tribal leader, Lapu Lapu and the Hispanic heritage of the Galleon trade.
The museum will also have two performance halls– a Flamenco studio and a multimedia room which can be joined into one main hall that can accommodate 270 people. Here people can watch Spanish dance performances and short play productions.
Visitors can delve into various themes, including Spain’s quest for spices, the pre-colonial Cebuano polity of Sugbu, and the events leading to the pivotal Battle of Mactan.
Three life-sized statues will add grandeur to the museum’s exterior. Standing tall along the entrance path are statues of Lapu-Lapu, the fearless Cebuano chieftain, and King Philip II of Spain.
A central fountain separates these figures, with Lapu-Lapu depicted raising his arms in an eagle-like pose, mirroring the majestic Philippine Eagle perched on his arm. Ferdinand Magellan, eternally reaching for discovery, stands resolute in the back garden, holding a globe in his hand.
The Mactan Newtown boasts luxury residences, office towers, hotels like the Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown and the Belmont Hotel Mactan, a beach, schools, retail shops, restaurants, and a local food market called Mactan Alfresco.
Slated to open within the next three years, the Mactan World Museum marks Megaworld’s fourth museum project, following the Chinatown Museum, Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art, and Brandy Museum, business blog spot, Bilyonaryo reported.
The Mactan World Museum will be the latest development rising inside the Mactan Newtown. Soon the township will also feature the Mactan Expo Center, a two-level standalone convention center.
