A silent but potent threat looms over our nation, silently infiltrating the lives of millions of Filipinos. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is spreading at an alarming rate, with over 7 million cases reported as of 2021, according to a study conducted by the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI). What's even more concerning is the vast number of undiagnosed cases, suggesting that the actual figures could be even higher.

Hypertension and diabetes stand as the primary culprits behind the increasing prevalence of CKD in our population. The most alarming aspect is that the majority of individuals do not experience any symptoms during the early stages of the disease. Unfortunately, once CKD reaches an advanced stage, it often necessitates life-altering interventions such as dialysis, kidney transplants, or even worse, succumbing to the disease.

In light of this imminent threat, doctors strongly advise regular check-ups to identify CKD at its early stages. The good news is that the necessary tests to detect CKD are included in the consultation package provided by Philhealth. By taking advantage of this opportunity, we can proactively detect the disease and take crucial steps to mitigate its impact.

The government has been actively taking measures to address the growing CKD crisis. Presently, there are 482 licensed dialysis clinics across different regions, offering accessible treatment options for those affected. Furthermore, Philhealth provides a benefit package that covers 144 dialysis sessions per year, ensuring that individuals receive the necessary care to protect their kidneys. This package emphasizes the significance of controlling blood pressure and blood sugar levels, while cautioning against the abuse of pain relievers and supplements.

While it is disheartening to acknowledge that kidney disease is irreversible, we must remember that prevention is our greatest defense. By making simple yet impactful lifestyle changes such as adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and refraining from smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, we can significantly reduce the risk of developing CKD. Additionally, diligent monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar levels is crucial for those at risk.

The escalating prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease among Filipinos demands immediate attention. By early detection, accessing available healthcare services, and adopting preventive measures, we can mitigate its impact. Let us prioritize our well-being, undergo regular check-ups, and embrace healthier habits to safeguard our kidneys. Together with the support of the government and healthcare institutions, we can tackle the silent threat of CKD and improve the overall health and well-being of all Filipinos.
