According to the Jesuit magazine La Civilta Cattolica, Francis was quoted saying “Still alive. Although some people wanted me dead” when asked about his health.

OUT on his first international trip since his colon operation, Pope Francis met with Jesuit leaders in Slovakia and used dark humor to share his recent plight with vociferous critics.

According to the Jesuit magazine La Civilta Cattolica, Francis was quoted saying “Still alive. Although some people wanted me dead” when asked about his health.

"I know that there were even meetings between prelates who thought that the Pope was in a more serious condition than was being said," he added. "They were preparing the conclave (to elect a new pope). So be it. Thank God, I am well."

The Bishop of Rome underwent a 3-hour surgery on July 4 to remove thirteen inches of his large intestine and spent 11 days in the hospital.

He has since resumed a full work schedule.

During his recent three-day tour in Hungary and Slovakia, Francis repeatedly aimed at traditionalists asking Catholics not to let religion color their politics and warns about ‘rigidity’.

He also took a jab at a “major Catholic television station” that was attacking him.

While he did not name the station, many speculate that he was referring to Eternal Word Television Network from Birmingham, Alabama that has pushed back against some of Francis’ initiatives.

"I personally may deserve attacks and insults because I am a sinner, but the Church does not deserve this. It is the work of the devil," the Pope said.

The journal also made a note about his stance on homosexual relationships where he was quoted saying, "we are afraid to accompany people with sexual diversity," adding that priests should offer support to homosexual couples.

Earlier this year, the Vatican issued a “Negative” ruling on blessing same-sex unions. What surprised many LGBTQ+ was that the response was approved by Pope Francis who has been vocal in his support.

He admitted that the criticism has annoyed him at times “especially when they make judgments without entering into a real dialogue.”

“Yes, there are also clerics who make nasty comments about me,” the National Catholic Reporter quoted Francis. “I can’t do anything there. However, I go on without entering their world of ideas and fantasies.”
