Schrock, Ethridge lead Azkals’ 25-man pool in Doha camp

Midfielder Stephan Schrock and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge have been appointed as captain and vice-captain of the Philippine football team Azkals as they resumed their training for the World Cup qualifiers in Doha, Qatar.

PHILIPPINE football team Azkals has finalized a 25-man pool led by Stephan Schrock and Neil Ethridge for a training camp In Doha, Qatar in preparation for their 2023 AFC Asian Cup/2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Suzhou, China this June.

Midfielder Schrock and goalkeeper Etheridge have been appointed as captain and vice-captain respectively, together with new names and members of the Azkals Development Team to train under the wing of coach Scott Cooper which will span from May 22-31.

Gerrit Holtmann, Jesper Nyholm, Raphael Obermair, and Lloyd Fagerlie have been named in the roster although their requirements for their registration for their Azkals debut are still incomplete.

Returning are Mark Hartmann of United City and Angel Guirado of St. Joseph as forwards of the squad in the absence of Javier Patino and Bienvenido Maranon whose naturalization is yet to be finalized.

ADT recruits that competed in the recent 2020 Philippines Football League bubble season include Jarvey Gayoso along with fellow Mar Diano, Niko de Vera, and Mark Winhoffer.

Completing the roster are midfielders Patrick Strauss, Iain Ramsey, Gerrit Holtmann, Raphael Obermair, Oliver Bias, Matthew Baldisimo, Patrick Reichelt, and Lloyd Fagerlie; goalkeepers Bern Schipman and Kevin Ray Mendoza; and defenders Carlie De Murga, Alvaro Silva, Luke Woodland, Martin Steuble, Jefferson Tabinas, and Michael Kempter.

Players from Manila are set to leave on Friday with the other players from Germany, Malaysia, Thailand and United States to fly out directly to Doha.

The team is then bound for Suzhou for the conclusion of the second round of qualifiers in which coach Cooper is hoping that the limited time together in Doha would still get the squad to be in sync as they face Guam (June 3), China (June 9) and Maldives (June 15) in their quest to make it to the next round.
