Two Filipinas have been included in Forbes’ 50 over 50: Asia 2022

Two Filipinas, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and Converge co-founder and president Maria Grace Uy, were included in Forbes’ 50 over 50: Asia 2022, a list of women “who are shattering age and gender norms all over the globe”

Uy is the co-founder of Converge together with her husband Dennis Anthony Uy back in 2007 that provides world-class internet connectivity to Filipinos.

And the key reason for Forbes to include her in the list was her role in the growth of its foundation to become one of thebiggest operating broadband in the country today.

“This recognition from Forbes Asia is an honor and proves to women worldwide the value they bring to their field, at any age. I would also like to give credit to the other hard working women at Converge who are making their mark in the ICT field,” Uy said.

Ressa, who worked as bureau chief and investigative reporter for CNN before founding Rappler in 2012, on the other hand, was cited for her “sharp coverage of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war”

Her inclusion in the filing of 10 arrest warrants for cyber libel has earned her consistent threats from the Philippine government and in return was named the first Filipino and only the 18th woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her fight for press freedom.

According to Forbes, the list is composed of “founders, business and political leaders, scientists and vanguards leading the way throughout the Asia-Pacific region.”

Other impactful women included in the list are Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, World Bank Managing Director Anshula Kant, Samoa Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, World Health Organization Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan, Macquarie Group CEO and Managing Director Shemara Wikramanayake, OCBC Group CEO Helen Wong, Indian author Arundhati Roy, and Comme des Garçons founder and fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, among others.
