Marking its 23rd year in the industry, the giant tech company Google announced the live caption translation feature for Google Meet, which is currently in its beta testing.
This feature allows the captions to be translated during a live video call, which means that participants would be able to communicate to each other without language barriers.
In its beta phase, the added feature only supports English conferences that can be translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German.
This feature is currently available to users of Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Teaching and Learning Upgrade.
According to Google's support site for translated captions, they will only be available on the web version for now.
If you are a Workspace admin looking into trying them out, you will need to fill out a form provided by Google.
For a Workspace user who has access to translated captions, the user must first go to Settings, and then click Captions, and the user will see the Translated captions feature and will need to turn them on.
This is a very helpful tool for professionals, especially educators who use Google Meet for online teaching.
The live translation of captions can greatly help teachers communicate with students who speak a different language than them and could also make the virtual discussion easier.
There is no word from Google as to when live-translated captions will be more widely available.
The fact that this feature is available in beta probably means that it will be rolled out to everyone at some point, but it can take weeks or months before it is finally available to the public.
