In an upcoming three-episode Netflix docuseries, tennis star Naomi Osaka opens up about the difficulties of her journey before becoming one the most influential athletes in the world.
NETFLIX is debuting the 'Naomi Osaka' docuseries, a three-episode release highlighting the tennis star’s journey.
Throughout three 40-minute-long episodes directed by Garrett Bradley, the 23-year-old will give fans a closer look into her career and personal life.
“No one really knows the sacrifices that you make just to be good,” she opens in the teaser.
The docuseries will show the Japanese born tennis player’s journey to making history as the first player of Asian descent to win two back-to-back Grand Slams, ranking No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association.
It follows the tennis star as she trains for the 2020 Olympics to take place in Tokyo and travels back to her childhood home country Japan to discover her roots.
The show also takes a deep dive into the two years after Osaka beat Serena Williams at the 2018 U.S. Open, marking a breakthrough moment for the athlete.
“Before I won U.S. Open, so many people told my dad that I would never be anything… I think the amount of attention that I get is kind of ridiculous. No one prepares you for that,” she continues.
In the three-part series, Osaka opens up about the unexpected difficulties of her journey to becoming one the most influential athletes in the world, including the unexpected loss of her mentor Kobe Bryant, intense traveling and training, and the reactions to her speaking out about Black Lives Matter as an athlete.
Last month, Osaka announced her withdrawal from Wimbledon to prioritize “time with friends and family” but assured fans that she will still participate in the Olympics. (See also: Depressed and stressed; Naomi Osaka withdraws from French Open )
In addition to her career as a sports star, the docuseries will also focus on Osaka’s family including her parents Leonard Francois and Tamaki Osaka.
