Yeong-su is a household name in South Korea as he has been in numerous shows and films in the span of his career. His Golden Globe nod however, was his first nomination in a major awards show after the success of “Squid Game.”

South Korean actor O Yeong-su made history as the first Korean actor to win “Best Supporting Actor in a TV Role” for his portrayal of Oh Il-nam in the Netflix exclusive show Squid Game on Sunday night (January 9) in Los Angeles, California.

Yeong-su is a household name in South Korea as he has been in numerous shows and films in the span of his career.

His Golden Globe nod however, was his first nomination in a major awards show after the success of “Squid Game.”

In his category, the 77-year-old actor, the most senior nominee of the night, was triumphant against Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of “The Morning Show,” Kieran Culkin of “Succession,” and Brett Goldstein of “Ted Lasso.”

Through Netflix, O Yeong-Su stated, “After hearing the news of the award, I told myself, ‘I’m a decent guy,’ for the first time in my life.”

“Now, it’s no longer ‘us within the world,’ but it’s ‘the world within us.’ While embracing the scent of our culture and while embracing the love for my family deep in my heart, I give thanks to everyone in the world. I hope you all live beautiful lives. Thank you,” he added.

“Squid Game” is arguably the most popular show in the world which became an international hit in a span of days and potentially the highest-grossing Netflix show ever.

The show is based on the Japanese survival game battle royale where the players are put into the field to play different games, turning them into each other, leaving only one victor and all of the other players dead.

In the Korean version, the games that the players encountered were traditional games chosen by the mastermind as revealed in the episodes and while the players are fighting for their lives, rich people are watching behind the screens with the games as their form of entertainment.

However, despite Yeong-Su and Squid Game co-actor Lee Jung-jae’s nominations, the “Squid Game” team, including director Hwang Dong-hyuk and actors Lee and Oh, will not be attending this year‘s Golden Globes amidst the controversy that has surrounded the show since last year’s edition of the Globe.

The boycotts came about over the lack of diversity that was put into spotlight last year when “Minari” won the best foreign-language film at the 2021 Golden Globe as the film could not compete in the best drama, musical or comedy category, because the Golden Globe Awards rules categorized the film, most of whose dialogue was spoken in Korean, as a foreign-language film albeit produced by American production company Plan B and New York-based film distributor A24.
