Now, not only can fans look up to these artists for their work in music but they also for their positive messages and social works.

K-pop groups BTS and BLACKPINK are taking the world by storm through their music and by becoming positive influencers of change for the United Nations.

Appointed by the South Korean President Moon Jae In as the “Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture”, the Korean boyband BTS attended the UN General Assembly on Monday, September 20.

In their speech, the group confirmed that all seven members have received vaccinations against Covid-19 and sent a message of encouragement to all the people in the world, especially the youth.

The group did not believe that the youth today lost to the pandemic when many important milestones such as graduations were canceled.

"In these pictures, you can see there are kids that are trying to learn new things...They are not lost, they are finding new courage and taking on new challenges", said Jin.

Instead of “the lost generation,” the group wished to be called the ‘welcome’ generation after the youth welcomed the change and “kept pushing ahead.”

Meanwhile, another K-pop group made headlines in the UN as the intergovernmental organization announced the 17 new advocates for the Sustainable Development Goals project which included BLACKPINK.

The group, made of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa, has become the first Asian artists to be appointed UN SDG advocates to “use their considerable spheres of influence to reach new constituencies to act now and keep the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals for people and for the planet."

They are joined by STEM activist Valentina Muñoz Rabanal, screenwriter Richard Curtis, and Microsoft Corporation president Brad Smith, among others.

“We truly believe in the importance of collective action,” BLACKPINK said in a statement. “We will only be able to make a difference when we come together, for the good of everyone. Now is the time to act for a safer tomorrow and a better future.”

Now, not only can fans look up to these artists for their work in music but they also for their positive messages and social works.

Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, is a 2015 project by the UN that sets 17 goals to ensure “all people enjoy peace and prosperity” by 2030. It serves as a “universal call to action” to build a better world for future generations.
