“The Game Center Museum” is expected to transport fans to the past, allowing them to experience the earlier versions of today’s arcade games and consoles.
Here’s a chance for die-hard arcade gamers to get steeped into nostalgia.
Japan, often hailed as the home of gaming, is slated to open an officially branded arcade game-themed museum in Nagoya later this month.
While it might seem that some of Japan’s best arcades are already like museums, here is an officially branded one.
“The Game Center Museum” is expected to transport fans to the past, allowing them to experience the earlier versions of today’s arcade games and consoles.
As reported by FNN, the space will include about 70 amusement machines, showcasing a range of retro classics, like Street Fighter II, Pac-Man, Afterburner, and Taiko no Tatsujin.
Games available to play include iconic retro titles such as Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Xevious, as well as music games from the Beatmania and Pop’n Music series. Street Fighter II, Afterburner, and Taiko no Tatsujin all make appearances.
There are also other interesting inclusions, such as older analog games like Sega pinball machines, as well as small trains people can ride on.
While iterations of modern-day arcades go back before World War II, they started to come into their own during the 1960s and 1970s, with bowling alleys, department store rooftops, and cafes all becoming places where people could go to game.
Arcades are struggling during the pandemic, with the face of Akihabara changing due to the shuttered game centers.
The museum is expected to take fans back how the iterations of today’s arcades have come about over time.
With an expected opening date later this month, The Game Center Museum will run until August 29. (NP)
