POPE Francis has signed decrees advancing the sainthood causes of six candidates, including a French nun, whose miracle is of healing a newborn girl from the Philippines.
During a meeting with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes on Dec. 13, Pope Francis recognized the miracle attributed to Blessed Marie Rivier, the founder of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary.
The miracle was of the healing of Angel Marie Vier Albaracin Degamo, from the Philippines, who was suffering from an “early generalized non-immunological embryo-fetal hydrops".
Hydrops fetalis has been a well-recognized fetal and neonatal condition throughout history in which there is a buildup of fluids around the lungs and heart.
According to the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Rivier suffered from a disability for most of her childhood after falling out of bed and injuring her hip at sixteen months old.
The injury also impaired her development and could barely stand even with the help of crutches. Because of this, the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Pradelles turned her away when she decided to enter religious life at 17.
During the French Revolution, when convents and monasteries were forced to close, Rivier founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary dedicated to the education of young girls in the faith.
Today, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary are present on five continents.
She died in 1838 and was beatified by St. John Paul II in 1982 after the miracle healing of Paulette Dubois who was diagnosed with infantile acrodynia.
The other decrees approved by Pope Francis:
●A miracle attributed to Italian Maria Carola Cecchin, member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Benedict Cottolengo. She was born in 1877 and died in 1925.
●The heroic virtues of Spanish Father Andrés Garrido Perales, a member of the Mercedarians. He was born in 1663 and died in 1728.
●The heroic virtues of Capuchin Father Carlo Maria da Abbiategrasso. He was born in Italy in 1825 and died in 1859.
●The heroic virtues of Comboni Father Bernardo Sartori. He was born in Italy in 1897 and died in Uganda in 1983.
●The heroic virtues of Polish Sister Ludwika Banas, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. She was born in 1896 and died in 1966.
