Josh Primo allegedly exposed himself multiple times to ex-team psychologist Dr. Hillary Cauthen
Dr. Hillary Cauthen, former psychologist of the San Antonio Spurs, has filed a complaint on Thursday in Bexar County, Texas, against the team and former player Josh Primo alleging that the latter, 19, exposed his genitals to her nine times during private sessions.
The former performance psychologist of the Spurs claimed that Primo assaulted her multiple times starting in December 2021 and chose to inform the team in January about the first incident.
“Rather than act on Dr. Cauthen’s reports, the Spurs ignored her complaints, hoping the organization could ignore and then cover up Primo’s actions,” per the lawsuit. “The Spurs organization was willing to sacrifice Dr. Cauthen to keep what they hoped would one day be a star player.”
The complaint also stated that after meeting with the Spurs management in January, the management decided to report the incident to general manager Brian Wright but no tangible actions took place and Primo went on to expose himself on more occasions, including once in a public area.
Spurs’ legal department only inserted themselves in the situation in May, telling Dr. Cauthen that Primo would still be able to participate in all team activities despite her complaints, and that she could work at home if she felt uncomfortable.
It came to a point that the psychologist’s contract was set to expire and after more meetings with the legal counsel, the organization opted not to renew the contract of Dr. Cauthen according to the suit.
The lawsuit came after Primo was suddenly waived by the Spurs last Friday, just four games into his second NBA season, and word spread not long after that the young player had been accused of exposing himself to multiple women, including to a former Spurs employee.
Dr. Cauthen spoke publicly about the allegations against Primo for the first time on Thursday in an emotional press conference.
“I am many things, but I’m not alone in the fight to do the right thing,” she said. “The right thing is to say: ‘No, this is not OK.’ To hold people accountable. To make systemic change. To protect those that suffer in silence.”
