DMW to provide aid to Taiwan OFWs and their families after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the island.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is prepared to help over 147,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families who were affected by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan.

So far, no casualties among the Filipino community have been recorded following the powerful tremor, Inquirer reported.

Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople is committed to continue supporting Filipinos in Taiwan, particularly those in Taitung, the quake's epicenter.

She noted that there was no damage to OFW work sites or dormitories that had been observed, but tremors and aftershocks in the area continue to persist.

Ople had sent directives to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office and other Filipino labor authorities in Taiwan to update her about the situation since she is currently in the United States (US) as part of the official delegation of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

She advised OFWs to follow orders issued by Taiwan Manpower Agencies and other relevant government authorities and to maintain contact with the Philippine government and representatives from the Filipino community.

"I would like to assure our over 147,000 OFWs in Taiwan and their families that the DMW is ready to provide the needed assistance, particularly for those who have been affected by the earthquake," Ople said.

Taiwan is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire which is a seismically active zone. Geologists have identified 42 active faults on the island.

Taiwan also lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. Though Taiwan is regularly hit by those earthquakes, most of them caused minimal damage.
