An expert testifying in the George Floyd trial has claimed the police officer who pinned him to the ground acted with objective reasonableness.

AN expert called in on the trial of police officer Derek Chauvin claimed the latter’s action of pinning George Floyd to the ground until he suffocated was “justified.”

Barry Brodd was called to the stand to explain the actions done by Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin, which led to the death of a black American named George Floyd.

According to the expert, the officer acted with “objective reasonableness.”

Ex-officer Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for over five minutes as he arrested him last May. He has denied the charges against him.

A video of Chauvin shows himself kneeling on Floyd’s neck, which led to weeks of worldwide protests against police brutality and racism in America.

Floyd was one of the several Black victims of police brutality amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Brodd claimed that Floyd posed an imminent threat which was a factor in his arrest at the time. He added that the officer was simply following police policy and current standards of law enforcement.

On top of his resistance to the arrest, he added that the crowd surrounding Floyd at the time of his arrest also posed a threat to the officers involved.

However, when cross-examined by the prosecution, he also admitted that the way Chauvin restrained Floyd was known to cause asphyxia, or not being able to breathe in a certain position.

When asked if it was commonly understood by officers that this particular position causes asphyxia, he agreed and said it was not new information.

The way Chauvin has been fighting for his innocence in yet another case of police brutality in America has outraged millions of people around the world.

To date, there is constant mistrust in police officers given their infamous history of harming black African-Americans and treating them a different way than they do with white suspects. (MO)
