Working women are choosing to take a career break or to exit the workforce entirely due to anxiety, burnout, and the need to take care of household responsibilities.

Women are more prone to burning out physically, emotionally and psychologically during the lockdown, with some even suffering from domestic violence.

A NEW study by the Makati Business Club, Inc. (MBC) reveals that working women are far more likely to have their careers disrupted because of the expectations placed on them to take charge of household responsibilities amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Angie Zafra, head of the MBC-UN Women C-Suite Project, she said that almost 70% of women experience negative changes in their routines which could also lead to a slower pace of career progression.

To make matters worse, the survey reveals that there are many working women who are choosing to take a career break or to exit the workforce entirely due to anxiety, burnout, and the need to take care of household responsibilities.

The study was conducted with 200 respondents, who shared how the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted both their personal and professional lives. The interviews were done on executive-level workers.

Women are more prone to burning out physically, emotionally, and psychologically during the lockdown, with some even suffering from domestic violence.

Of the women who revealed they were affected by the pandemic, 10% were either demoted or had their working hours reduced, while 21% had salary cuts.

On top of having to go to work, the responsibility of making sure the household was well-kept and the children were homeschooled fell on the shoulders of women.

This was seen by how 80% of women said they received help from their spouses amid the lockdown, while 100% of men shared that their wives helped them.

Knowing this, companies should establish measures to make sure they protect their vulnerable employees by making necessary adjustments to cater to their needs.

They should also conduct their own internal studies on how they can adjust to the “new normal” in terms of balancing both the needs of the business and their employees. (OM)
