A temporary transport terminal has been set up in Santa Rita, Samar for bus passengers who have to disembark at this town to transfer to Tacloban City due to the ongoing weight limits implemented at the San Juanico Bridge.
The new terminal, located in Barangay Dampigan, now serves as a drop-off and pick-up point for passengers bound from Samar Island and elsewhere who are traveling to Tacloban City.
From the temporary terminal, passengers are transported for free via government vehicles to a temporary terminal in Tacloban.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Eastern Visayas director Lord Byron Torrecarion said the terminal is among key interventions in the ongoing crisis arising from the limited load capacity of the vital bridge that links the islands of Leyte and Samar.
“The terminal is now helping manage the flow of commuters, complemented by Libreng Sakay vehicles to ensure safe and free transport,” Torrecarion told reporters.
Setting up a temporary terminal in a village just four kilometers away from the San Juanico Bridge will help decongest the highway leading to the bridge.
The terminal was established through the partnership between the inter-agency task force and the provincial government of Samar through Governor Sharee Ann Tan.
To support terminal operations and ensure round-the-clock visibility, the OCD regional office augmented 30 units of 500-watt solar lights, illuminating the area and nearby round-the-clock checkpoints.
