Ormoc City once again bags the title of overall grand champion in the recently concluded Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet in Tacloban City last April 24-27as it continues to prove that Ormoc athletes are the best in the region.

In total, the city has collected 352 medals of which 178 are gold, 104 silver, and 70 bronze which immediately propelled it to claim this year’s regional champion title, which it has been guarding for two straight years in 2018 and 2019. Because of the pandemic, no regional athletic meet materialized.

Based on the released official tally of the games, 213 of the medals were obtained by secondary students of Ormoc City, including 96 gold, 71 silver and 46 bronze. Players from the elementary level have a total of 139 medals, including 82 gold, 33 silver and 24 bronze.

With the victory of the young athletes, Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez congratulated the athletes, teachers and their coaches for winning the championship again.

“I am very proud of all our athletes. And I am endlessly thankful to everyone who has contributed to each athlete’s journey towards this grand slam victory -- their parents, the coaches, the teachers, the members of the LGU. We are 3-peat champions, a feat I honor and cherish,” Torres said in a statement.

In gratitude to the city's heroes for bringing pride to their fellow Ormocanons, the city government announced a cash incentive for the athletes of P5,000 for gold; P3,000 for silver and P2,000 for bronze medals. However, the incentives will not be given per athlete, but per medal.

In her speech, Mayor Gomez thanked her husband, Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez (4th district) for laying the foundation of the city's sports program, which is now reaping success in the local sporting event and international competitions like the Southeast Asian Games.

"Amo tun it pag paura"

With this, many netizens-- athletes and non-athletes-- are inspired by the city government's support towards its players and hope that this will also inspire other cities and municipalities to likewise support their athletes as they too bring pride and joy to their localities.

"Amo ito it pag dara. salit man it ira mga bata mag karit kay diri nira pinapabay-an. It iba daw. Makaluluoy nala it mga bata ngan pati ghap an mga coaches kay haros ira na gasto maka mulay la an kabataan," one parent of former athletes told OpinYon 8.

Similarly, the Leyte province secured the second spot with 50 gold, 74 silver and 56 bronze medals while the third place went to Tacloban City with 19 gold, 27 silver and 46 bronze.

As of this writing, the Department of Education has yet to release the final number of student-athletes from the region who will compete in the upcoming 2023 Palarong Pambansa Marikina City this August.
