New state-of-the-art Russian-made PUVs make for new attractions in Leyte town

Mahagnaw Transport Corporation's new "JeepKo" PUVs promises residents of Tanauan, Leyte a safer, more comfortable and more convenient riding experience.

TANAUAN, Leyte- RESPONDING to the need for additional public transportation in Leyte, the municipal government of this town together with a private transport firm, has recently rolled-out new modern PUVs which are sure to generate second look from local residents because of their sleek designs.

Dubbed "JeepKo," the new PUVs made by Russian car maker GAZ will ply the Tanauan-Tacloban City route under the Mahagnaw Transport Corporation.

The JeepKo, a local variant of GAZ's GAZelle Next Cityline, is a 22-seater Euro 4 standard minibus equipped with air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, and cashless payment systems.

Cesario Licopit, vice president and operations head of Mahagnaw Transport, said they are now distributing payment cards by TRIPKO to its commuters for free to facilitate cashless payment inside the new PUVs.

At present, Jeepko units charge a minimal fare of 15 to 33 pesos, with a three-peso discount upon the use of the TRIPKO card.

JeepKo units have also provided free rides to medical frontliners and Tanauan residents at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in Leyte province.

The new PUVs are in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which aims to transform public transport in the Philippines for a safer, more convenient riding experience.

Mahagnaw Transport is now eyeing to expand its operations in other franchise areas in Leyte province and in Eastern Visayas provided that there is a viable opportunity. (JKA)
