At least 2,000 health workers in Eastern Visayas will get free meals for two months under a program initiated by the Office of Civil Defense in the region as the government tries to boost the morale of health workers who were working day and night to stop the pandemic.

AS part of the government’s continuing support for medical frontliners battling the Covid-19 pandemic, at least 2,000 frontliners in Eastern Visayas will get free meals for two months.

About 6,000 packs of hot meals are being prepared and delivered daily to key areas in the region, ensuring that health workers in the region will have their three square meals a day.

The program was launched on May 1 and will run until June 30, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Eastern Visayas Regional Director Lord Byron Torrecarion said.

The initiative, funded under the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act, is in partnership with local government units, Tingog Partylist, and House Majority Floor Leader and Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

“This project is first in the Philippines. We proposed this to boost the morale of our medical workers who have been working day and night to end this pandemic. Through this, we hope to effectively curtail the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the region,” Torrecarion added.

Each pack of hot meals contains rice, a main dish, vegetables, dessert, and drinks.

The meal support is being implemented in Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Baybay City, the entire first legislative district of Leyte province, and Northern Samar province.

About 360,000 hot meals will be provided to medical workers for two months.

The OCD is eyeing to expand the coverage of meal assistance as requested by more local government units in the region. (JKA/With report from PNA)
