THE long wait is over for newbie Jane de Leon.

The much- expected filming of “Darna”, a Philippine folk heroine story on crime-busting is already on the roll.

After the unprecedented invasion of the Covid-19 pandemic that has crippled a lot of industries including telecommunications, one of them, the disfranchisement of the Very High Frequency (VHF) free-to-air TV Channel 2 of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation where “Darna” was supposed to hatch through its film arm, Star Cinema, the television network management had announced a deferment of the production until further notice.

The resumption of the project, though, has recently rendered a TV series instead.

Still, Jane de Leon is the actress picked to don the fantastic outfit of a female crime buster. Although Jane had thought her launching vehicle would be a film, she has already come to terms with reality.

It is still much more practical and rewarding than nothing at all.

To think that the title role was assigned to Angel Locsin to reprise her former screen protagonist role in the past but she had an injury in her spine in a stunt when she was doing “The General’s Daughter” so she backed out of the “Darna” project.

It was then offered to Liza Soberano instead, but on a training stint, while doing “Bagani”, her finger had figured in an accident so she courteously begged off from the role.

Erik Matti was supposed to direct Angel but the entire project was shelved altogether.

Later, Jerrold Tarog was tapped to meg Liza, but she had to advertently leave the assignment. Jerrold, in no time at all, had other offers waiting for him, so he grabbed them while the “Darna” production hadn’t started.

Award-winning director Chito Roño has replaced Jerrold.

According to an interview, Jane said she had butterflies in her stomach when she learned that Chito would be her director. It’s known all over show business that Roño is no mean director. But de Leon was assured that Chito would be very considerate of stars like Jane who is being groomed for solo stardom.

Others in the cast of the fantasy-drama are Iza Calzado who plays the mom of Darna and Ding from a planet called Marte, Zaijian Jaranilla, Kiko Estrada, Simon Ibarra, Levy Ignacio, Richard Quan, among others.

“Darna” is scheduled to screen not only in the Philippines but streamed live globally as well.
