For Eastern Visayas, the traditional jeepney has long been a staple of public transportation, but it's time for an upgrade. The jeepney modernization program, initiated by the government, aims to replace the old and outdated jeepneys with more efficient and environment-friendly vehicles.
Modernized jeepneys now provide a more comfortable and safer ride for passengers. The new vehicles will be equipped with air conditioning, CCTV cameras, and GPS systems, making travel more convenient and less stressful. This will also help to reduce the number of accidents caused by outdated brakes and steering mechanisms.
The new vehicles will be powered by cleaner-burning fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG), significantly reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. This will not only improve air quality but also help to mitigate climate change.
However, some may argue that the cost of modernizing jeepneys is too high and that it will be a burden on passengers and operators. Many ask why not simply put the CCTV, GPS and other new technologies into the traditional design of the jeepneys. Perhaps change its power to a more eco friendly alternative.
At this point, the public is more concerned on keeping the identity and cultural impact of the traditional jeepneys than the "comfort" provided by the modern ones.
"The history of our jeepneys is a reflection of the ingenuity and resilience of us Filipinos. Its more than just comfort. It's us man gud, out identity. Tapos sugad sugad la ha ira pag change dara la kay may aircon ngan sleek it design hto na mga sasakyan nga himo hin mga taga gawas. Ito pala that is no longer us, " Joy, a student, rants.
