An Intranet system installed in an elementary school in Sta. Rita, Samar now enables teachers and students who have no access to the Internet to cope with the “new normal” of learning.

A year after the Department of Education (DepEd) started online classes under the “new normal,” several places in Eastern Visayas are still finding it hard to access learning materials.

This is primarily due to transportation difficulties, as well as the lack of access to fast Internet service essential in the new educational setup.

In Sta. Rita, Samar, a technology called “Intranet” is now being utilized to help students and teachers at the Sta. Elena Elementary School cope with the “new normal” and enable them to continue their education amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Intranet system, which was developed and introduced by electrical engineer Vinyl Oquiño, works through an installed server within the school where teachers can upload their learning materials.

The materials are then transmitted from the school to the barangay hall in Sta. Elena through a series of six antennas installed in the area.

The system can be accessed by the educators and students through their cellphones and computers, Oquiño said.

“An advantage hini nga system syempre bat apala maaram na gumamit hin gadget para pagkadto nira ha senior high school ngan college diri na hira uwat ha technology bisan kun tikang hira ha remote area han Samar,” the engineer said in an interview.

He also pointed out that compared to the Internet, children accessing the Intranet is safe from malicious content as it can be controlled by teachers and parents. (JKA)
