Health authorities delivering vaccines got a scare of their lives after the vehicle they were riding narrowly missed a landmine set up by suspected NPA rebels in Leyte.

A convoy led by the Calbayog City Health Office narrowly missed a suspected rebel-initiated landmine blast yesterday (July 27) in the vicinity of Pinabacdao, Samar.

According to reports, the convoy, composed of health personnel and police security escorts on board the city’s patrol car were on their way to the DOH Regional Office in Palo, Leyte to pick up the vaccines allocated to Calbayog when they heard three gunshots, followed by an explosion, in the vicinity of Barangay Lale.

Twenty meters past the explosion, the convoy maneuvered to Pinabacdao PNP station.

Policemen immediately proceeded to the area but the suspected rebels had already escaped.

Authorities were able to recover about 24 feet of electric wire, a fired cartridge of 5.56mm caliber and scattered fragments of PVC pipes that were suspected to be used in the explosive device.

Philippine Army troops are now in hot pursuit of the suspects.
