Why Travel To Other Places?

An unknown bard popularized the adage, "A change of latitude would help my attitude."

We are cognizant of the fact that we have to broaden our horizons by going places. This way, we can appreciate different cultures and have a more profound understanding of the world outside our periphery. That is why traveling is truly educational.

Does this mean we have to go to other countries to experience this? The "world" here refers to the areas outside our comfort zone. We don't have to go far.

There exist diverse cultures just outside our doors and treasures waiting to be uncovered in our own country. These are compelling reasons to go around one's native land, meet Filipinos in other corners of the country, value their unique cultural heritage and tradition, have a taste of their local cuisine, and admire the beauty of the countryside.

A Very Rough Ride?

Last few weeks was an opportunity to go to Northern Samar, a part of the Eastern Visayas Region I have never been to. When in this latitude, my general impression of Warays and this Northern Samar province completely changed. Those from here would rather be called Northehanos.

With my project partner, Bob Acebedo (with wife Malou) and our very knowledgeable guide, Bennie Ortego, we landed in Catarman. I assumed we were into a very laid back part of EV. Waray friends from Metro Manila advised me against going farther than the capital town as I will be in for "a very rough ride". Well, based on what I experienced, yes and no!

After eight days of sojourn from east to west of Catarman, I was in complete awe of its countryside. This part of the Philippines is a must-see if one wishes to understand the regional diversity, a wealth of history, distinct dialects within its borders, historical sites and landmarks, miles and miles of white-sand shorelines, and its pristine natural wealth.

All these will be reflected in the book series, Bob (who hails from Palo, Leyte) and I are editing.

Why Go Far?

I can boast that I have been to all continents of the world, including the Great White Continent or countries under the Antarctica Treaty. Each has its own cultural identity and distinctiveness. Around 75 percent of these were official travels where I either attended as delegate or participant or covered as a journalist when I was with Manila Bulletin.

Everyone wants to travel for the sake of traveling. Thing is, when we plan to go abroad, it entails substantial economic consideration.

Change of latitude is soothing to the soul, they say. But why go far?

Exploring the Philippines can bring us to more interesting places, meet people of very distinct cultures, and go to unexploited wonders.

For the adventurous, Northern Samar boasts of exotic and virginal beauty of nature. We cannot underestimate the significance of local marvels that rival many destinations in foreign lands.

(In my next column, I will introduce places we went to that never in my wildest dream would I ever have the courage to go to.)

National Pride

Having seen and touched countless hidden treasures in our own country gives me a sense of pride.

Discovering regional differences when we come face to face with fellow Pinoys in these parts of the country bring us closer to local traditions. Domestic travel make us realize that we have to be more open and develop with them a grounded sense of being Filipinos.

When we travel, we come to realize that "home" is from where the journey begins.
