Among the old-timers in showbiz, if we limit it to the female, you can say Vilma Santos is the most lucky, with Sharon Cuneta taking second place.
Both the political and the entertainment circles have been very good and generous to Vilma.
First, she still has good movie offers even if she is now pushing 72. (We have the same age---along with my UST classmate Rudy Fernandez, Tirso Cruz III, Nora Aunor, Jay Ilagan and others of our generation. But through the years, it appears that Vilma shaved her official age by one year.)
Second, Vilma is the wife of the current secretary of the Department of Finance. Just like Kris Aquino in her time, she need not worry about the BIR. (Joke only!)
Third, Vilma and her family have all but appropriated for themselves all the powerful and juicy positions in Batangas, as if the constitutional prohibition on political dynasties is non-existent. Well, there is no enabling law, but there is the constitutional provision. The people are not stupid.
Being so lucky, Vilma should have been at the Christmas concert sponsored by the Office of the President and Radio-TV Malacañang recently. Honoring the First Lady Louise's invitation should have been easy to do. But there was no Vilma, although Sharon Cuneta was there, and also Tirso Cruz III, Lani Mercado, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Robin Padilla.
The palace's Christmas concert enhanced the jovial mood of this month, and it might just be the answer to dissipate the vitriolic hatred that characterized recent days in our political landscape.
"Konsyerto sa Palasyo" (Concert at the Palace) honored the invaluable contributions of local cinema to the nation’s arts, culture, and economy.
There are two great achievements by our homegrown creatives who have successfully “invaded” the international stage during the last quarter of the year.
Sofronio Vasquez, a singer from Ozamiz City, who was recently named grand champion in the 26th edition of “The Voice USA.” Vasquez rendered a powerful interpretation of the songs “Unstoppable” and “A Million Dreams.” Sofronio Vasquez received $100,000 in cash prize and a recording contract with Universal Music Group.
We note that Vasquez reached the top with the help of his coach, singer Michael Buble.
Another achievement is the phenomenal box-office record set by the movie “Hello, Love, Again” starring Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards—P1.4 billion, on top of its positive reviews following its local and international releases. The film has become the highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time.
