Chinese President Xi Jinping told the closing ceremony of the BRICS Summit 2026 in India that the organization that he founded together with 10 other state leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa is now on the right path in writing a “new chapter of strength through unity of the Global South.”
Xi followed up with the statement that the policy of “might makes right” should have been discarded long ago.
It is not a secret in world history that the countries of Europe and America with the biggest navies have bullied small nations for the last 500 years—just by displaying their huge ships and modern warfare capabilities in the peaceful ports of China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and others in the Global South.
Thus these countries were colonized, became vassals and suffered incredible sacrifices both in human and economic terms. The same is true in the African continent, albeit much worse.
By calling out the logic of “might makes right” and exposing its outdated reason for being, President Xi exhorted the BRICS and all other small nations in the Global South to rise and claim their rightful place in the community of nations.
And they can only do this through cooperation and unity, under the banner of groups like BRICS and the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization).
This infuriated US President Donal Trump, whose governance policy is war, war, war. In Laguna and other places in the Philippines, they call this “utak pulbura.”
While Trump follows a policy of hostilities in Ukraine, Iran and West Asia, Venezuela, Cuba and other places, the leaders of BRICS are serious in leveraging their close ties with emerging markets, safeguarding global supply chains and fostering a large integrated market.
At BRICS, the Chinese leader proposed a five-point initiative to boost trade, manufacturing, investment, and technology cooperation—which should serve all of humanity.
Xi said the Global South countries should jointly "defend the rule of law in international affairs, safeguard the basic norms of international relations, including sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, and ensure that international law and international rules are applied to all."
With their geometrically opposed views on global governance, it is small wonder that Trump has been demonizing BRICS and undermining, even insulting, its modest achievements to date.
