YES, this could happen anywhere else: A homeowners association divided over a certain project of incumbent officers.

Typical Filipino.

Indeed, it’s a pity. Because instead of cohesiveness, the pros and cons for the basketball gym roofing project hereabouts just cannot look at each other eye to eye now especially that the latter accordingly shopped around for signatures against the project.

But it’s good to note, the warring parties’ entered into a momentary ceasefire over their “word war” on FB as we write this.

The pros, led by the incumbent officers, marked the 30th of April as the deadline of submission of interested contractors for the roofing project of the village, Phase 4A.

And right after that, the official page on FB of the HOA got awash with memes in opposition of the project saying there is a better time to launch the project and not in the middle of a pandemic.

A consultation among HOA members must have or should have been done before the HOA officers offered and accepted bids for the project the leader of the “cons” says.

To this effect, the incumbent president did a lengthy explanation online saying a consultation or meeting cannot be possibly held owing to the health crisis at hand.

But the “cons” went on to hold their own meeting and, of late, we heard they already hired a lawyer for all intents and purposes.

But methinks, this all about money.

The “cons” are afraid, the HOA might lose all its savings or escrow account of around P5 million, more or less, according to the grapevine.

On the other hand, the “pros,” although they may have all the good intention of “roofing” the basketball gym to make it usable under the sun and heavy rains, they may also have “good intentions” in dipping their hands in the cookie jar before the next elections come around in November 2021.

We did a little research.

Size of a standard basketball court similar to that of the NBA has an area of 436.24 sqm. (28.7 x 15.2 sqm) while the cost is pegged between $30 to $80 per sqm.

If we’ll compute it at $30 (P1,500) per sqm, we’ll arrive at a product of P654,360 (436.24 x P1,500) only for the roofing.

That would be another story if they’ll compute it at $50 per sqm (P1,090,600).

Still, that’s very far from the claims of the “cons” the project will drain all the money the HOA has which is estimated to be at around P5M now they said.

So, what’s the deal?
