When I was a teenager, I learned about a set of ideas that helped people live better lives. This group is called Initiatives of Change, formerly called Moral Rearmament Movement (MRA) founded by Frank Buchman, and it teaches something special called the “Four Absolutes.” The four ideas are absolute honesty, absolute love, absolute unselfishness, and absolute purity. Even though they sound like big words, they are really simple ways to choose kindness and do what is right.
First, absolute honesty means being truthful all the way. It is not just about telling the truth to other people. It is also about being honest with yourself. For example, if you did something wrong, you should not hide it or pretend it didn’t happen. When we are honest, people can trust us. Trust is important because it helps friends and families feel safe with each other. Honesty also helps you feel better inside, because you don’t have to worry about being caught in a lie.
Next is absolute love. This does not only mean romantic love like in stories. It means caring for others. It means listening with an open heart and trying to understand how someone else feels. Love can look like smiling at someone who feels left out, speaking kindly, or helping when you see someone needs support. When we choose love, we make our communities stronger. We remind everyone that they matter.
Then there is absolute unselfishness. Unselfishness means thinking about others, not only yourself. Sometimes that means sharing your toys, helping your teacher, or being a good friend when someone is having a tough day. Unselfishness also means you try to do good things even if no one is watching. When you practice unselfishness, you learn that helping others can make you feel proud and joyful. Your heart grows bigger.
Finally, we have absolute purity. Purity means making sure your intentions are good. It is about asking yourself, “Why am I doing this?” If your goal is to hurt someone or trick them, that is not pure. But if your goal is to be fair, honest, and kind, then your actions match your best values. Purity of heart helps you choose the right path, even when it would be easier to do the wrong thing.
These four ideas can change the way we live, especially in a world where people sometimes argue or disagree. Instead of always trying to “win,” we can choose honesty, love, unselfishness, and purity. When we do that, our lives feel more meaningful.
Later on, I shared these ideas in teaching and learning with others. Many people say they feel more connected and fulfilled when they follow the Four Absolutes. They also feel less lonely and less upset, because they are living in a way that matches their values.
In the end, the Four Absolutes remind us that we can make good choices every day. Imagine a world where many people try to be honest, show love, help others, and do good with pure intentions. That kind of world would feel like “heaven on earth.” Let’s learn these lessons together and help make our school, our homes, and our community kinder places for everyone.
