“For the eighth consecutive year, the Philippines was named one of the ten worst countries for working people by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), an organization that promotes and defends the rights of workers” – Inquirer news item.

“For the eighth consecutive year, the Philippines was named one of the ten worst countries for working people by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), an organization that promotes and defends the rights of workers” – Inquirer news item.

A fact from the ITUC report: “…the murders of two prominent Filipino trade unionists last year – Alex Dolorosa, a call center organizer with the BPO industry Employee Network and Jude Thaddeus Fernandez, an organizer from Kilusang Mayo Uno.” “From 2016 t0 2023, a total of 72 union members were killed over their union activities, Sentro secretary general Joshua Mata said.”

That workers are killed and government has so far been unable to give justice to the victims’ families is indeed an insult to our countrymen who serve as the backbone of our country’s economic productivity and growth as a nation. For the longest time, labor organizations – construction workers, jeepney drivers, production personnel, farmers, fisherfolks, teachers, nurses, and lowly paid workers in various industries have been clamoring for decent wages, o. The greater tragedy is that the government has not been working seriously to program realistic strategies that will provide jobs of millions of unemployed Filipinos, who among them are college graduates, or those who have successfully graduated from their 12th Grade educational level. Indeed, jobs for the jobless will make our country a society where every citizen is productive and able to contribute to a robust economy, at the same time able to enjoy a life of decency for his/her family.

This current administration of President Bongbong Marcos and VP/Education Secretary Sara Duterte (even if they were installed in their positions of great responsibility under a Comelec-rigged 2022 elections, as professionally studied by the IT experts, the TNT led by former DICT Secretary retired Gen Eli Rio, Jr) should concentrate on uplifting the plight of our workers. They have held the topmost position in government for more then two years now, yet our productive forces in society have yet to be given special urgent attention. Only then will our country’s development really go forward and reach that level of a society that is genuinely “JUST and HUMANE,” and no Filipino is left behind and struggling for a decent life!
