I Understand Their Fear: A Former OFW Speaks

When I heard that some of my fellow former OFWs in Dubai want to go home because of the Israel-Iran war, I truly understood their feelings. I was also an OFW in Dubai for 15 years. And even now, living back in the Philippines, I still get worried every time there is trouble in the Middle East.

Dubai is known to be a safe place. But when there is war in nearby countries, fear starts to grow. It may not reach Dubai, but we cannot ignore the possibility. We remember the stories, the sirens, the alerts. We always think, "What if it spreads? What if I can't go home? What if I lose my job?"

OFWs go abroad not just for adventure or comfort. We go to work hard, earn money, and support our families. But behind the smiles in photos and happy messages to our loved ones, we carry so much worry. We think about safety, about the future, and about survival.

During my time in Dubai, I experienced several regional conflicts. Every time, I would feel anxious. I couldn’t focus at work. I would call my family more often. I would check the news all the time. I prayed nothing bad would happen.

This is why I understand them. I understand the fear, the sleepless nights, and the need to feel safe. They are not weak. They are not overreacting. They are simply human. And sometimes, being human means choosing peace of mind over a higher salary.

Even if we are far away from the battlefield, the emotional stress is real. We OFWs do not only send money—we also carry emotional burdens, silent worries, and the pressure to stay strong.

Today, I’m already in the Philippines. But when news like this comes, I remember those days. I feel again that same fear. And I silently pray for all my fellow OFWs still working there.

To my fellow kababayans in Dubai and other parts of the Middle East—your fear is valid. Your safety matters more than anything. Never feel guilty for choosing peace, because peace is priceless.

Be strong.
