‘There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't yet met.’ - Irish Poet William Butler Yeats
ACROSS THE SEAS THROUGH TIME AND SPACE
A funny topic came up in a casual conversation with friends yesterday. They asked me how I ended up being fondly called ‘the energizer bunny’ by acquaintances and associates around the world via zoom. During online meetings, no matter what timezone I’m in, my energy level is the same as if I lived in their location.
I’m regularly invited to deliver wacky yet insightful messages halfway around the world - even though they know it will be two o’clock in the morning on my end. If you think that’s unusual, imagine being asked to be entertainer, humorist or joke master for a meeting at that hour!
People want to know how I’m able to light up a room - day or night. Simple. Here’s my honest-to-goodness answer.
I like people.
I like being with people.
I like bringing joy, smiles and laughter into people’s lives.
I don’t have a problem connecting with people from around the world. It’s a lot of fun. I enjoy getting to know about them, their lifestyle and (my favorite topic) the food in their country!
Here are some Do’s and Don’ts when socializing.
1. Speak to express - never to impress.
2. The aim is to communicate and not to dominate the conversation.
3. Most of all, don’t act like you’re the smartest person in the room, even if you really are!
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
In an event, whether in person or online: you have choices.
You can be a ‘wallflower’, by just sitting there - like a rock.
Or you can add value by truly being interested.
Best choice: make them feel that they are seen and heard.
Now you know how to be the life of the party. In a nutshell, this is the formula: Always Add Value.
