When I hear a Freddie Aguilar song, I am instantly transported back to my childhood in Palilan, Jimenez, Misamis Occidental. His music isn’t just a melody or a rhythm—it’s a memory. A piece of the past so vivid that I can still see the narrow barangay roads once lined with coconut trees now semi-concrete houses, hear the laughter of my siblings playing in the yard, and smell the ricefield with simple home-cooked meals that brought us together as a family. Those were the days when we were complete. When love and warmth filled the walls of our humble home. The once green house in front of Palilan Elementary School where my mother had been a school principal for 9 years nd my father was three-term barangay kagawad.

Freddie Aguilar’s iconic voice, especially in the song Anak, became the silent narrator of our lives. Its message was powerful—it scolded, it reminded, and it healed. Every time I heard it, I felt a deep sense of responsibility and reflection. It guided me, especially during moments when I strayed or felt lost. That song didn’t just make me pause—it made me a better son. And for that, I owe him more than words could ever express.

His songs had soul. They spoke of struggle, hope, rebellion, and love. They echoed the lives of ordinary Filipinos—our pain, our joys, our longing to return to our roots. And for someone like me, who left home to chase dreams far away, Freddie’s music was the bridge that kept me connected to where I came from. Even now, far from Palilan, all it takes is a few guitar strings and his voice to bring me back.

Now that he has passed on—rest in peace, idol Freddie Aguilar—what remains are his songs, etched deeply in the hearts of Filipinos ike me. Artists may die, but legends like him live forever in the memories they help us relive.
