How do we celebrate planet earth? Cleaning is always good. Cleaning the rivers and the seas, the mountains and the plains. It’s been 53 years since the first Earth Day in 1970. But what has transpired since then?
We now buy drinking water for safety. But those are bottled in plastic, usually, which also harm the earth. We pollute the earth with packaging and materials toxic to living creatures in the seas and on land. We say we love nature but we continue to use and promote products that shorten the lifespan of the planet.
Let us celebrate the earth by appreciating and respecting nature.
It is good that plantitos and plantitas rose to the occasion during covid-19 lockdowns and quarantine periods. But have they continued to be plant lovers afterwards? I see some ningas cogon mentality at the rooftop of the condominium we are staying. Plants have dried and pots are just filled with hardened soil. But to be fair, there are also those who really continued their romance with plants and now contribute to oxygen and pollination in the areas where they live.
Plastic usage can be avoided, so let us make it a lifestyle. A little overused but ‘refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle,’ will never be out of fashion.
Try a little minimalism one day at a time to avoid bulks of trash even inside our own homes. Always have the environment in mind.
Plant a tree or more trees. Let us do it silently without the cameras and media. If we really care, it does not always have to be a massive tree planting activity that die down naturally because it is left unguarded after the planting event. Sincerely do Mother Earth a favor. In the process, it is us people who will benefit from it.
Research and help propagate native plants. Those which really grow naturally in our area. Never use chemicals in the garden. Stay natural as possible. Conserve water too.
There’s a lot of activities that we can do for our planet. Let us plan what we will do on Earth Day and then do it always, Earth Day or not. Before we know it, we have already made a big leap for the protection of the earth, our home.
