FROM our perch here in Calumpang we received the news that the drug problem in Quezon's urban areas has taken on a concerning level, with buy-bust incidents involving the police and inveterate drug couriers becoming rampant.

A police report said that last Friday night, the joint personnel of the Quezon Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) and Lucena DEU led by Maj. Mendel Casao conducted an anti-illegal drug operation against the suspect, Gerald Diadesma, 33, jobless, a resident of Purok Atis, Barangay Mayao Crossing in Lucena City.

Diadesma is listed in the police roll as a high-value individual (HVI).

The operation occurred in Dalahican Road, Purok Little Baguio, Barangay Ibabang Dupay where the suspect sold to a poseur-buyer one piece of a heat-sealed transparent plastic sachet containing suspected shabu.

Diadesma, realizing he was set up, tried to escape and fired at the arresting police officers, wounding SSg. Arnel Buemia on his right chest and SSg. Donald Bulaklak on his left knee.

Although wounded, the two cops fired back but the suspect ran and made good his escape, leaving a trail of blood because he, too, had a gunshot wound. Diadesma was later arrested and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The wounded police officers were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are recuperating.

Confiscated items from the suspect include the P16,000 buy-bust money, a black wallet containing eight pieces of a heat-sealed transparent plastic sachet containing a white crystalline substance believed to be shabu, and black Rusi motorcycle without license plates.

Police said the suspected shabu confiscated weighs approximately 13 grams with an estimated street value of P265,200.

Anwar Visits Malacañang

President Bongbong Marcos Jr. welcomed Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Palace on Wednesday afternoon, March 1, for the latter's maiden official visit to Manila.

Marcos together with First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and high-ranking government officials welcomed Anwar and his delegation.

PBBM and the Malaysian Prime Minister held a bilateral meeting to discuss areas of mutual concerns such as political, security, economic cooperation, and people-to-people ties. They will also exchange views on regional and international issues.

It should be noted that Anwar is the first head of state to visit the country under the current administration. Bongbong is both grateful and happy that his colleague from an Asean neighbor took the time to visit him.

Incidentally, Prime Minister Anwar is a close friend, actually a BFF of former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada. Both Anwar and Erap had their ups and downs in politics and both were incarcerated, regained their freedom, and vindicated by history.
