Right after actress Anne Curtis and her family returned to the country from a disrupted vacation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), she immediately issued an official statement about Quezon City Fourth District Congressman Jesus “Bong” Suntay dragging her name in a privilege partisan speech at the congressional hearing on the charges of sedition, insurrection and political destabilization slapped on Vice President Sara Duterte recent impeachment case.
Congressman Suntay narrated in the House of Representatives that the cases filed against Sara were only founded on imagination as he took to discussion an analogy with a surreal experience just seeing Anne.
“When I saw her something heated up inside me,” said Bong as he played on sexual fantasies with Curtis.
“But I don’t think I can be charged with anything because it is just an imagination,” he added.
These statements drew a lot of reactions from different sectors, primarily from the entertainment industry, the very agency where Anne is part of.
While Curtis accepted the apology of Bong’s wife, Shiela Guevarra-Suntay and their children, the actress continued to deplore the misogynistic behavior of the congressman.
According to Shiela, she also didn’t agree with what her husband said about Anne. She also clarified that she didn’t laugh off the situation as some quarters were accusing her of.
“…I do not accept your non-apology. But I also will not carry this as a personal wound.
“I do, however, accept your wife’s apology.
“Because as a wife and a mother myself, I know exactly what she must be feeling—that particular type of embarrassment, that helplessness, that quiet grief of watching someone choose so poorly in public.
“To her, and to your children, this is not your shame. Please know that. And I hope anyone reading this extends them the same grace. They did nothing wrong, and they deserve to be left out of it entirely…,” Anne gushed.
Curtis strongly condemned Congressman Suntay as a misogynist, or better still without naming it, a male chauvinist pig.
“…You have become the poster boy of something much bigger: a culture that still thinks it’s acceptable to talk about women this way. Worse, one that tolerates it from our leaders. As they say, misogyny dressed up as a joke is still misogyny.
“…Now, what I will carry is the responsibility to say clearly, on behalf of every woman who has ever been spoken this way.
“We deserve better. Not just now. While this topic is a hot issue, but, EVERY SINGLE DAY.
“Not just from Mr. Suntay. From all of it. From the casual sexism disguised as clever remarks. From public officials who forget who they serve.
“From a culture that still asks women to laugh it off, to be not so sensitive and to pick up their battles…,” the actress explained.
