A nevus of the fallen

NEXT year’s presidential election is not about moral ascendancy.

The culture of corruption is so prevalent that even the least of government agencies and units are hardly spared of the rather socially tolerated culture. You ask the contractors and the builders, the suppliers, and traders engaged in any government deals for any government local and national, you will be surprised from their reactions at the prevalence of the practice.

Amidst all the talks from left and right of their supposed abhorrence of the practice, the truth is they, too, are very much involved in it. The least that the Duterte administration or any administration can do is to tone down, if not eliminate, the endemic greed among those in power. So next year’s election is not and should not be a contest for the ‘holier than thou’ wannabees.

Of our kind, nothing and no one of that sort can truly measure up to the standard of a perfectly upright government. So yes, stop the crap that next year’s presidential contest is about moral ascendancy. This election should be about leadership. It should be about who can deliver what. It should be about who can sustain the momentum of the fledging progress. It should be about who can truly and significantly improve our economy.

Of our kind, it should be not just good leadership. It should be both good and effective leadership. One that is not cowed because of so much goodness. One that is not overwhelmed because of too much effectiveness. So if there are any wannabee that flaunts moral ascendancy over leadership capability, I bet there’s more hypocrisy in him than anyone else he names as way under and below his measure of decency.

And by the way, better yet be truthful and acknowledge the prevailing social malaise, after all the ill remains still a nevus of us the fallen.
