Amidst the successful campaigns against terrorist groups, it is still evident that the fight is still far from over.

In a recent encounter, soldiers from the 42nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army rescued a 17-year-old terrorist in the hinterlands of Can-Avid, Eastern Samar.

The minor, who goes by the alias “Ka Nonoy,” was among the escaping members of the Sub Regional Guerrilla Unit Yakal (SRGU) Sub Regional Committee Browser of the notorious Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee of the New People's Army.

The rebels' team was believed to be operating in various areas, including the villages of Podol, Boco, Balagon, Salvacion, and Can-ilay.

In an attempt by the Reds to retreat, the troops engaged in a wild-goose chase along the vicinity of Barangay Jepaco and Barangay Can-ilay.

"Ka Nonoy" was abandoned by his team, still with an M16 rifle at hand and a bag containing various ammunition.

Interventions

Considering that he is a minor, "Ka Nonoy" was placed under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Can-avid.

Unfortunately, the case of "Ka Nonoy" is only one of the many minors recruited by the rebel group into believing the ideologies and false promises of these terrorist groups.

Majority of them were borne of rebel parents. Due to poverty, there was no choice.

While the government condemns the involvement of minors in warfare, Brig. Gen. Lenart Lelina, 801st Brigade Commander, called out to SRGU leader, Tirso Alcantara, to stop exploiting children to participate in the bloody realities of war.

These children are deemed victims of circumstances. Given the proper guidance, they could be assets to society.

Unfortunately, due to poverty, many of these minors are not as lucky as "Ka Nonoy." Many have lost their lives in a battle they should not be in in the first place.
