Catbalogan City, Samar – On December 5, the Waray-Waray Youth Advocates held a celebration for World AIDS Day at the CAS-AVC auditorium of Samar State University. The event, titled "Kamustahay Serye: People Living with HIV - A Journey of Hope," featured the inspiring story of Lorenz Olleres, a passionate advocate living with HIV. His personal narrative not only instilled hope but also strengthened awareness and support for individuals affected by HIV.

Lorenz Olleres, a prominent TikTok influencer and ambassador for The Red Whistle PLHIV+ as well as a YPeer HIV advocate, shared his transformative journey. His efforts symbolize hope and underscore the vital role of education and community support in combating stigma and fostering a more inclusive society.

The theme for this year's World AIDS Day, "Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right," emphasizes the essential rights of everyone to health and well-being, particularly for those living with HIV.

A Journey of Strength and Hope

In his presentation, Lorenz detailed his 11-year experience dealing with HIV, offering insights and inspiration to those in similar situations. He highlighted the importance of understanding one’s health status, accessing timely treatment, and the collective responsibility to dismantle discrimination and stigma.

The Kamustahay Serye served as a platform for fostering empathy, encouraging dialogue, and implementing initiatives aimed at inclusivity, while addressing the critical need for education about HIV and AIDS.

Launch of Project ABOT

The celebration also marked the launch of Project ABOT (Access to Better Options Through Health Education), a groundbreaking initiative by the Waray-Waray Youth Advocates. This project aims to educate young people about sexual health, HIV prevention, and essential services. By dispelling misinformation and promoting healthier lifestyles, the project aspires to curb the spread of HIV in the region.

Breaking Barriers through Education

Through the implementation of programs and platforms like the Kamustahay Serye, alongside initiatives such as Project ABOT, the Waray-Waray Youth Advocates demonstrate their commitment to addressing the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS through education, empathy, and empowerment.

The event served as a reminder that health and well-being are fundamental rights for all, urging society to unite in dismantling prejudices and discrimination.
